why decentralised generation

Although some renewable sources have already been exploited in several countries in the developing world (mostly hydro and mini-hydro), the unexploited potential is still huge.

Africa, as well as most countries in Latin America and rural Asia, is still excluded from the development that wind power and solar-PV energy production have experienced in Europe, North America and some Asian countries, where the annual growth rate in the last 3-5 years have constantly been around 25-30%. One of the reasons for the low exploitation of such an enormous potential is the lack of solutions suited to these countries' specific contexts. Logistic factors, prohibitive initial investments which cannot be recovered in a reasonable time with the present tariff levels. These are two key aspects that are preventing many African countries from keeping pace with Western and Asian ones in the development of their wind and solar power sectors.
There is a clear need if a sustainable solution to the energy crisis that is tackling the African continent has to be found. And such a solution has a name: DECENTRALISED GENERATION. Decentralised generation solutions are small scale generators which generate electrical power close to the point of consumption (being it a private house, a small enterprise, a village, etc.), hence avoiding timing and costs related to the extension of national and regional electricity grids, as well as the many problems related to grid blackouts. In other words, a smarter way of generating and consuming electricity.
